30 September 2009

Consett played out their first league draw of the season at home to Penrith this evening, but will be disappointed not to have made it three points after letting a two goal lead slip in the last five minutes. A goal in each half from Adam Emson, in his final game for the club before his agreed transfer to Bishop Auckland, looked to have been enough. However Penrith's Robertson pulled one back in the 86th minute, and then the same player equalised three minutes into stoppage time to snatch a point.

Consett suffered their worst home defeat for almost exactly 20 years as they went down 1-6 to Shildon at Belle Vue today. A first half hat track from Warren Byrne - the first from the penalty spot - meant the game was pretty much over by half time. When Adam Emson converted a Gary Ormston cross on 68 minutes there was brief hope of a fightback, however Andrew Johnson restored Shildon's three goal advantage nine minutes later. Ian Watson broke clear five minutes later 1-5 in the 82nd minute, and substitute Mark Tinkler's 25 yard strike in stoppage time completed the rout - the worst at home since Consett lost by the same score to Gretna on 23 September 1989.

In today's draw for the 1st Round of the Durham Challenge Cup Consett were handed an away tie at Esh Winning. Given that Esh usually play their home midweek games on a Tuesday, this probably take place therefore on Tuesday 20 October.

Consett went down 2-3 at Newcastle Benfield tonight but can consider themselves unlucky to come away from a cracking game of Northern League football with no reward. The Steelmen found themselves 0-2 down at half time thanks to a superb Dean Fuller free kick on the quarter hour and an emphatic Shaun Bell finish 16 minutes later. An inspired second half fightback saw them pull one back through substitute David Duke's precise finish, only to then go two goals down again from an even better Dean Fuller free kick. Gary Ormston headed in Consett's second in the 82nd minute and although Consett laid siege to the Benfield goal in the closing stages with Adam Emson hitting a post, David Scorer seeing a goalbound shot blocked and Paul Henderson-Reay forcing a brilliant save from Andrew Grainger, the home side held on for the win.

Consett five match league winning streak came to an abrupt end today, however there was no disgrace in losing 1-3 at home to FA Vase winners Whitley Bay who have yet to drop a Northern League point. Carl Piecha fired the Steelmen into the lead in the 15th minute, but two goals in rapid succession from Adam Johnston just before half time saw the Bay go in at the break 2-1 up. Visiting skipper David Coulson headed home a third to wrap up a double for Whitley against Consett this season.

Consett's first ever trip to Whitehaven proved to be a fruitful one as the Steelmen progressed comfortably into the 2nd Round of the Brooks Mileson League Cup, winning 3-0. The kick off was delayed by 30 minutes due to the late arrival of several of the Consett team, but when the game did get under way it was the visitors who dominated. Paul Henderson-Reay opened the scoring with his first Consett goal after 12 minutes (pictured above), then six minutes before the interval he doubled his tally with a well taken shot on the turn. Gary Ormston scored the third mid-way through the second half, heading home Chris Scott's superb cross. Consett will now play Tow Law Town away after they won 1-0 at Billingham Town tonight in their 1st Round tie.

12 September 2009

Five league wins in a row for Consett now as they hammered Billingham Town 5-1 away to continue their climb up the table. The game was effectively over by half time as the Steelmen went in for their interval cuppa 4-0 up. Gary Ormston tapped in after seven minutes and on the half hour Adam Emson also scored from close range. Paul Collins made it 3-0 with his first goal for the club, and Emson added the fourth just before the break. Consett went nap through Jonjo Dickman in the second half before Michael Emmerson got an 88th minute consolation goal for the home side.

9 September 2009

Consett registered their fourth consecutive league win following a 1-0 victory over Bedlington Terriers at Belle Vue. Bizarrely, this was the Steelmen's first home Northern League game of the season, and they left it late to secure the points with the only goal of the game coming from Jonjo Dickman in the 89th minute.

In other news, Consett striker, Craig Tate, is available for transfer. Interested clubs should contact the secretary or manager Ken Lindoe.

A Consett side missing a host of regulars picked up a useful three points on the road at Shildon in the second successive league game where their opponents finished with only nine men. Consett took the lead after 27 minutes through a Steve Huggins penalty after Adam Emson had been brought down in the area. The lead lasted little more than a minute though as the home side levelled courtesy of Gary Brown's 30-yard strike. Nine minutes into the second half Chris Scott scored what proved to be the winner ending a fine Consett move to finish from just outside the box. Four minutes later Shildon's Karl Everitt was sent off for a head butt, and ten men became nine in the 68th minute when keeper Keith Finch was dismissed for pulling back Adam Emson as he was about to slot the ball into an unguarded net. The win keeps Consett handily placed in mid-table but with all five of their league games played to date having been away from home.

Consett have let it be known that midfielder Craig Robson is on the transfer list, as Ken Lindoe trims his squad following the acquisition of several new players recently. The latest of these is David Gordon, a left-sided midfielder signed from Spennymoor.
