Consett and Dunston will have to try again to decide who advances to the next round of the FA Cup after a hard-fought 1-1 draw at a windswept Belle View Stadium today.
Luke Carr gave the Steelmen the lead against their higher-ranked opponents, firing in the rebound from six yards in the 14th minute after visiting keeper Karl Dryden had saved from Jermaine Metz.
Dryden had already made a good save to deny Ali Alshabeeb in a one-on-one, and Jake Stafford came close to doubling the lead against his old club, but curled a 20-yard shot inches wide.
It remained 1-0 to Consett at half-time, but they were kicking into a strengthening wind in the second half, and Dunston thought they had equalised on 57 minutes, but the ‘goal’ was disallowed for a foul on the keeper.
But on the hour it was 1-1 when Mark Fitzpatrick, who was top scorer in the Northern League last season as Dunston won the championship, burst through to fire past Kyle Hayes.
Either side could have won it after that, with Carr seeing a shot blocked from Darren Holden’s excellent pullback, and sending a diving header just wide from Calvin Smith’s cross, while at the other end Andrew Grant-Soulsby put a towering header just over the bar.
It stayed 1-1, however, and the sides will replay at the UTS Stadium at 7.30pm on Tuesday.
