Consett face Northern League rivals in the FA Cup – and a possible rematch with old foes with a new name

Consett have been handed home ties in the first two rounds of the 2020-21 FA Cup, following today’s competition draws at Wembley.

We have been drawn at home to fellow Northern League 1st Division side Ryhope Colliery Welfare in the Extra Preliminary Round.

We have met the Colliers in the FA Cup twice before, and come out on top on both occasions. The first was in 1968-69, when we won 2-0 in the 1st Qualifying Round. Then in 1972-73 we prevailed 3-1 at the same stage, both games taking place at our old Belle Vue Park ground.

Preliminary Round prize

The prize for the victors this time is a home Preliminary Round tie against Ossett United – a club only formed in 2018 from the merger of Ossett Town and Ossett Albion. They play in the Northern Premier League Division One North West – the same level as Dunston and Marske United.

We have never played them before, but did face Ossett Town three times in the FA Cup, most recently in 2017-18, when we lost 2-1 at their ground in the 1st Qualifying Round. Previous meetings resulted in a 3-0 home win for us at the same stage in 2007-08, and a 5-1 home defeat in the 2nd Qualifying Round two seasons earlier.

The Extra Preliminary Round tie is due to take place on Tuesday, 1 September, and the Preliminary Round on Saturday 12 September. We are awaiting updated guidance from the FA and Government on whether spectators will be admitted.

Replays have been abolished in this season’s FA Cup, but if ties are level after 90 minutes there will be no extra time. Instead, the winner will be decided by a penalty shootout.
