Consett Reserves miss out on runners-up spot – but have a cup final to look forward to

Consett Reserves missed the chance to claim runners-up spot in Wearside League Division Three today as they lost their final game 3-0 to Barnard Castle at Belle View.

Gav Scott’s team have already clinched promotion, and needed to win by two clear goals to grab second place from their visitors, who were three points ahead, with a three-goals-better goal difference.

But the young Steelmen found visiting striker Ben Goodfellow too hot to handle, and he helped himself to a first-half hat-trick to put Barnard Castle in control.

Consett rang the changes in a bid to get back into the game, but found the going tough against a bigger, more experienced side, who held on fairly comfortable to finish second behind champions Deerness Valley.

However, Consett Reserves still have one game left this season, the 3rd Division League Cup final against chester-le-Street United resserves this Thursday, 18 May.

The game is being played at Belle View with a 7.30pm kick-off, and Consett hope they’ll get a big crowd to cheer them on. The Reserves’ first-ever printed programme will also be on sale at the turnstiles, priced £1.
