Consett manager Tony Fawcett says his squad is shaping up well ahead of the new season

Manager Tony Fawcett says his Consett AFC squad is shaping up well ahead of the club’s preparations for the 2023-24 Northern Premier League season.

It’s Tony first close season with the club after he joined from Whickham in October last year, and he’s busy putting his stamp on the squad.

Goalkeepers Mark Foden and Ross Coombe have left, along with defender Charlie Exley and midfielders Daniel Smith and Dan Marriott, while midfielder Adam Mitchell is on the transfer list.

Three new signings have been confirmed so far – midfielders Ben Ramsey from Morpeth Town and Harvey Smith from Whickham, and goalkeeper Aaron Steavens from North Shields.

More are set to follow once terms have been agreed and the paperwork is complete, and Tony says his intention is to build a squad which can avoid last season’s brush with relegation.

“Last year was a big learning curve for me as well as the players. We’ve started putting together a squad that’s relevant for the league that we’re in.

“Last year’s squad was a really good footballing side, but sometimes lacked a bit of steel. We weren’t tough enough at times.

“This pre-season we’re putting together a team that is capable of doing both, and by the end of pre-season I want to see a real high energy, hard working, fit side that is able to compete in every single game we play in.”
