Consett miss chance to go top of the league after losing at home to Pontefract Collieries

Consett missed the chance to go top of NPL Division One East as they suffered a first league defeat of the season to a well-drilled Pontefract Collieries side, who recorded a fifth successive win.

It was a feisty game featuring eight yellow cards – three for the home side and five for the visitors – but there were few clear-cut scoring chances.

The first half ended goalless, largely thanks to Consett keeper James Anderson, who saved Adam Haw’s penalty with his feet after Dan Capewell had bundled over Louie Chorlton.

Pontefract took the lead in the 51st minute when Connor Smythe‘s deflected shot beat Anderson at his near post.

Consett’s best chance to level came in the 83rd minute when sub Nathan Greenwood’s well-struck effort was kept out by a great low save by Lloyd Allinson.

With five minutes of time added and the home side pushing hard for an equaliser, Colls scored again to secure the points, Adam Priestley scoring from the spot after Calvin Smith tripped Frankie Sinfield.

The result saw Pontefract leapfrog Consett to go second on goal difference from league leaders Belper Town, who Consett travel to next weekend.
