Consett go third after beating fellow play-off hopefuls Carlton Town

Consett are third in the NPL Division One East after a 2-1 win over fellow play-off hopefuls Carlton Town at a chilly Belle View Stadium today.

There was little to choose between the two sides in the first half, though Consett were grateful to keeper James Anderson for a good save from David Adegbola just before the break to keep the scores level.

The Steelmen took the lead on 59 minutes through Scott Fenwick, who volleyed home on the half-turn from Kaleb Young’s cross from the right.

Wil Shaw and Zak Atkinson missed chances to increase the lead, but Jack Gibbons made it 2-0 in the 80th minute to give Consett some breathing space.

Carlton pulled a goal back in added time through Zac Hill, but Tony Fawcett’s side saw out the game to claim three excellent points.

There was drama after the final whistle when Carlton striker Lamin Manneh was sent off for using foul and abusive language towards the match officials.
