Consett draw a blank as stubborn Winterton grind out a goalless draw

Consett suffered a frustrating afternoon as lowly Winterton Rangers held them to a 0-0 draw at a blustery Belle View Stadium today.

The visitors had the strong wind at their back in the first half, and Joshua Dacre thought he’d lobbed home keeper James Anderson from halfway after four minutes, but the ball dropped just over.

Scott Fenwick had Consett’s best chance of the first half on 17 minutes, but couldn’t get enough on his hooked effort to trouble Rangers keeper Nathan Popple.

Consett began the second half strongly, and had chances in the opening 10 minutes through Fenwick, Wil Shaw and Josh Baggs, but all were squandered.

On 56 minutes Ben Ramsey got in behind the Winterton defence down the left and fired just over the bar, with Fenwick and Zak Atkinson screaming for a pass in the middle.

The closest Consett came to a goal was midway through the half when playmaker Jake Orrell’s free-kick picked out Fenwick, but his header hit the bar and bounced over.

Winterton, who picked up a useful point in their fight to pull away from the relegation zone, had a chance right at the death to steal all three on a rare break upfield, but Jaime Ture dragged his effort wide when well placed.
