Consett leave it late at Liversedge but are back up to third after smash and grab win

Consett staged their own version of The Late Show at Liversedge tonight and headed home with three hard-earned points after a 2-1 win.

Tony Fawcett’s side were behind for more than an hour, but stayed in the game, and two goals inside a minute turned it on its head.

They went behind on 24 minutes when Kaleb Young’s mistimed tackle gave away a penalty, and Alfie Raw beat James Anderson from the spot to give Liversedge the lead.

Consett’s best chance of the first half came 10 minutes later, when Scott Fenwick’s pass put Wil Shaw in on the right, but he was denied by a good save by keeper Jordan Porter.

The second half saw Liversedge create most of the chances, but Consett dug in, and were still within reach of their hosts going into the last few minutes.

They kept probing for an equaliser against the well-organised home defence, and they breakthrough came in the 87th minute when Jake Orrell’s cross came back off the woodwork and bounced in off the unfortunate Kurt Harris for an own goal.

Most of the Consett fans present would have been happy with a point, but a minute later their team snatched what would prove to be the winning goal.

Orrell drove forward from midfield and fed the ball to Wil Shaw, whose shot took a deflection off Joe Skarz on its way into the back of the net, sparking wild celebrations from the visitors.
