Teenage striker Charlie Watt was given his first start for Consett in their friendly against Temecula tonight – and scored twice to give them a 2-1 win.
The 18-year-old, who signed from Bishop Auckland last month, grabbed a goal in each half at a bitterly cold Belle View Stadium.
He was one of six changes to the starting line-up from the weekend as manager Tony Fawcett used the game to give some of his squad some much-needed minutes.
Jake Jensen, Harry Outterside and Jack Caygill were also given their first starts, as was latest signing Dominic Curl, while James Anderson returned in goal.
The visitors from San Diego looked sharper in the first half hour, and created a handful of decent chances, without seriously testing Anderson.
But the Steelmen began to impose themselves as the game progressed, and Temecula keeper Bryan Morales made the save of the game from Caygill on 36 minutes, tipping his curling effort over the bar.
Three minutes later Consett took the lead after good work by Jack Gibbons and Calvin Smith on the right, and the latter laid the ball on a plate for Charlie Watt to tap in from a couple of yards out.
It remained 1-0 at half-time, but within a minute of the restart the Steelmen had doubled their advantage.
A through ball sent Ben Ramsey in on goal, and although Morales made a good save from his angled drive, the ball fell kindly for Charlie Watt to fire home from 10 yards for his second goal of the game.
Five minutes later Temecula deservedly halved the deficit when Alexis broke down the right and scored with a lovely low finish into the far corner to make it 2-1.
Both sides had more chances, but were unable to take them. A big bonus for Consett was a first appearance in seven months for Kieren Aplin, who is on his way back from injury.
He almost marked his return with a goal, but Morales beat out his powerful free-kick after he was fouled right on the edge of the penalty area.
- Consett’s next scheduled game is the rearranged game at Stocksbridge Park Steels on Saturday, 10 February, KO 3pm. Seats – priced £20 (£15 for early bird season ticket holders) – are still available on the official club coach to the game, which leaves Belle View at 10am.
