Consett get home draws in FA Cup and FA Trophy

Consett were today handed home ties in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy as the draws for the opening rounds of both national competitions were made by The FA.

The Extra Preliminary Round of the Emirates FA Cup saw the Steelmen drawn at home to big-spending Redcar Athletic, one of the favourites for this season’s Northern League title.

The tie will take place at Belle View Stadium on Saturday 3 August – a week before the Northern Premier League kicks off. It is our first-ever cup encounter.

One player who will be particularly keen to do well is Consett’s summer signing Isaac Walker, as our fellow Steelmen are his old club.

The prize for the winners is a Preliminary Round tie away to NPL side Pontefract Collieries two weeks later.

In the FA Trophy, Consett have been given a bye in the Preliminary Round, and will enter in the 1st Qualifying Round with a home game against Atherton Collieries, who will be in NPL Division One West after relegation from the Premier Division last season.

The game against the Manchester-based side will be played at Belle View on Saturday 7 September.

The game will be Consett’s first home game in the FA Trophy for 30 years. The last was in 1994, when we drew 0-0 with RTM Newcastle at our old Belle Vue Park ground.

It will be a first-ever meeting between Consett and the Colls, who were promoted as champions of the North West Counties League in 2017, and won the NPL’s West Division two years later.

After two Covid-interrupted seasons, they finished 19th in the NPL Premier Division in 2021-22, 18th in 2022-23, then bottom last season.
