Consett put league leaders Liversedge to the sword with impressive attacking display

Patched-up Consett maintained their unbeaten home league record today with a good 3-1 win over table toppers Liversedge – but it could have been many more.

The visitors’ goalkeeper Kobe Mathers saved his side from a drubbing as the hosts cut through them almost at will, despite being without five regulars.

Consett almost took an early lead with a spectacular own goal by Liversedge centre-back Ben Whelan, whose back header went over the keeper, who did well to claw it off the line.

Lucas Lowery then had the ball in the net after running onto a through ball from Brendon Daniels, but was flagged offside as he rounded the keeper.

Consett deservedly took the lead on 19 minutes when Oli Thompson slipped the ball to Brendon Daniels 12 yards out and he made no mistake, firing home his first goal of the season.

Ben Atkinson hit the post with a curling effort as Liversedge responded, but Consett doubled their lead in first-half added time when Oli Thompson took the ball from Isaac Walker and finished into the bottom corner.

Mathers twice denied Donny Holdsworth in the opening minutes of the second half, and the keeper also thwarted Walker and Lowery as Consett threatened to run riot.

They made it 3-0 on 61 minutes with a flowing team move started and finished by Will Constantin, pictured top.

He intercepted the ball in his own half and fed it wide to Walker, who advanced up the left before picking out Thompson. His unselfish pass put the ball on a plate for Constantin, who timed his run upfield to perfection.

Consett were rampant and almost had a fourth when Walker’s trickery left the keeper on the ground, and he teed up Holdsworth, whose placed effort was superbly cleared off the line by Whelan.

The Steelmen rang the changes, giving debuts to new signings Noah Inneh and Finn Hunt, as well as valuable minutes to Liam Colledge and Lucas Lockhart.

Liversedge got a consolation goal five minutes from time when sub Ant Brown finished at the far post, but when the final whistle went, they knew they had been second best.
