Consett v Brighouse Town

Depleted Consett slumped to a 4-1 defeat to Brighouse Town in new manager Tony Fawcett’s first home game, leaving them perilously close to the relegation play-offs zone.

They made five changes to the side which lost on penalties to Newton Aycliffe in the Durham Challenge Cup, with Ross Coombe replacing Mark Foden in goal, cup-tied Josh Baggs returning at right-back, James Metcalfe recalled from his loan at Crook Town to line up in central defence, Declan Bisset coming in for Scott Fenwick, and fit-again Matty Slocombe returned to the starting XI in place of Lewis Green.

The manager’s options were somewhat limited, however, as he was missing five players; Calvin Smith was out injured after pulling up in the warm-up in midweek, Karl Byrne and Colin Larkin were both unavailable, and Dan Capewell and Kieren Aplin suspended after reaching five bookings.

It was a game between two teams who have been struggling for form of late; Consett without a win in 11 games and Brighouse with only one victory in their last 10 – a stunning 6-0 success over Pontefract Collieries.

The visitors started the game brightly, and had the first chance after 10 minutes when 10 turned and shot wide.

Brighouse took the lead in the 21st minute when Laurence Sorhaindo went on a solo run which took him past three players before firing home.

On 28 minutes Baggs latched onto Atkinson’s knockdown and fired a well-struck effort goalwards from outside the box, but was off target.

On the half hour Brighouse doubled their advantage through Jack Boyle after good work by Jack Normanton, and Cyril Giraud had a shot blocked as Consett sought a reply.

Two minutes before half-time the visitors took complete control of the game with a third goal.

Consett midfielder Matty Slocombe handled a goalbound shot in the six-yard box, for which he was yellow carded, and Sorhaindo converted the resulting penalty. It was a dejected home side who trudged back to the dressing rooms at half-time.

The Steelmen made a change at the break, with Adam Mitchell replacing Giraud, and the first real action of the half saw them handed a lifeline back into the game on 51 minutes when Brighouse skipper Corey Gregory was sent off for handling Mitchell’s shot on the line.

Zak Atkinson scored his ninth goal of the season from the resulting penalty to make it 3-1 and give the Steelmen hope of a comeback, particularly as they now had the extra man.

A foul on Declan Bisset gave Consett a free-kick 25 yards out, but Jake Orrell fired over the bar. Then Mitchell latched onto a loose ball pinging around the penalty area, but fired over the bar.

As they tried to make the most of their numerical advantage Consett threw on another forward, young Oscar Taylor, for Metcalfe, but it was another sub, Mitchell, who threatened again on 73 minutes when his shot was blocked from a pullback.

Brighouse keeper Brett Souter then made a good save from Bisset on 77 minutes, and a minute later he denied Mitchell as Baggs’ cross picked him out.

On 82 minutes Taylor wasn’t far away from getting on the end of Atkinson’s ball across the face of goal. The young striker had another chance a minute later when he latched onto a long punt forward by Coombe, and although he took his shot early it was well off target.

In the last minute of normal time Consett thought they had scored a second goal, which would have set up a grandstand finish. Atkinson rounded the keeper and rolled the ball home after latching onto Orrell’s flick-on, but his joy was short-lived as the linesman raised his flag for offside.

Despite a spirited effort from the home side it was Brighouse who had the final word when a quick break saw Sorhaindo set up sub Callum Charlton to clinch the win with a goal in the third minute of added time.
