Consett v North Ferriby

Consett are in a play-off place and just two points behind the league leaders after beating a very good North Ferriby side 3-1 at Belle View Stadium.

The win, which followed back-to-back defeats to Pontefract and Belper, lifted them to fourth in the NPL Division One East table. The Steelmen did it the hard way, coming from behind after conceding an early goal, and having to defend resolutely amid heavy pressure.

Manager Tony Fawcett made two attacking changes to the side which had lost at Belper at the weekend, with Scott Fenwick in for Zak Atkinson up front and Ben Ramsey returning in place of Nathan Greenwood on the left.

But it was the visitors who started the game quicker, with centre-back Oli Donald blazing a good chance over from a corner in the 7th minute. A minute later Ferriby were ahead, as Tom Corner reacted quickest to a loose ball to curl a shot into the top corner from a tight angle.

Consett keeper James Anderson then made a good save from Danny Earl’s shot from distance, beating the ball out at the expense of a corner, to prevent them doubling their lead.

It was against the run of play that Consett equalised in the 17th minute when Arjun Purewal glanced a header into the bottom corner from Jack Gibbons’ excellent right-wing cross.

Two minutes later Calvin Smith’s pass found Ramsey, who took his shot early, but drilled it wide of the far post. Ferriby were still causing problems, and it took a fine point-blank save by Anderson to deny Corner a second goal midway through the half.

At this stage the sides were trading chances, and Wil Shaw had a chance to put Consett ahead when he won the ball in midfield and drove at goal, but his effort from 20 yards didn’t trouble the keeper.

But on 34 minutes the young striker made no mistake, timing his run superbly to convert from a few yards out from another excellent Gibbons cross to make it 2-1.

And a minute before the break Ben Ramsey made it 3-1, smashing home a tremendous half volley from 20 yards, pictured top, after Scott Fenwick flicked on a long ball.

Half-time: Consett 3 North Ferriby 1

Half-time arrived with Consett in control, despite having been second-best for long spells, and they were grateful to their goalkeeper for a string of saves.

The second half saw North Ferriby again take the game to their hosts, but Anderson was equal to everything they threw at him, making three saves in the first six minutes of the second half, with the pick of them being when he stood up to make an excellent stop in a one-on-one with Josh Whiteley.

Consett were playing on the break, and Shaw was unlucky with an effort from the edge of the box after the keeper’s punch from a corner fell to him. But at the other end Ferriby missed two chances in quick succession around the 70-minute mark, you started to get the feeling this might be Consett’s night.

When the visitors did manage to beat the keeper, in the 77th minute, he was saved by the woodwork, as Whiteley’s well-struck effort came back off the crossbar.

For all their domination of the second half, North Ferriby couldn’t get a foothold back in the game, and although Consett rode their luck at times, they held on to pick up three valuable points.
