Liversedge v Consett

Consett staged their own version of The Late Show at Liversedge and headed home with three hard-earned points after a 2-1 win.

The Steelmen were behind for more than an hour in their first game of 2024, but stayed in it, and two goals inside a minute turned it on its head.

Manager Tony Fawcett made three changes to the side which lost at Stockton on Boxing Day, with Arjun Purewal, Dan Capewell and Jack Gibbons returning in place of the suspended Josh Baggs, Matty Slocombe and Zak Atkinson.

Luke Parkin had the first attempt on goal in the eighth minute, but fired wide from long range. A couiple of minutes later Consett felt they should have ad a free-kick when Ben Ramsey appeared to be flattened by Kurt Harris in a race for a ong ball, but the foul went the other way.

Three minutes later the same two players came together again, and this time the referee decided the Liversedge No 6 had illegally halted his opponent, and showed him the game’s first yellow card.

Liversedge were looking lively up front, and Kwame Boateng brought a fine save from Consett keeper James Anderson on 14 minutes.

Four minutes later Consett had another sight of goal when a free-kick dropped for Scott Fenwick, but he didn’t get a clean shot away, and it was an easy save for keeper Jordan Porter.

Consett fell behind on 24 minutes when Kaleb Young’s mistimed tackle gave away a penalty, and Alfie Raw beat James Anderson from the spot to give Liversedge the lead.

Raw had a chance to double the home side’s lead five minutes later after a stray clearance fell to him, but Anderson saved well to keep the score at 1-0.

Consett’s best chance of the first half came 10 minutes later, when Scott Fenwick’s pass put Wil Shaw in on the right, but he was denied by a good save by keeper Jordan Porter.

Half-time: Liversedge 1 Consett 0

Liversedge started the second half strongly, and had a flurry of chances. Parkin had a tame shot easily saved by Anderson, and a good run by right-back Will Portman set up Boateng, whose effort drifted wide of the far post. Then Raw flashed a great ball across the face of goal, but no Liversedge player was able to get on the end of it.

Consett made a double substitution just before the hour, with skipper Matty Slocombe and new signing Jake Jensen replacing Capewell and Young, and the change gave fresh energy to the midfield.

On 69 minutes there was a big handball shout when a ball into the box seemed to hit a Liversedge hand, but nothing was given, and Slocombe lashed the loose ball just wide from 20 yards.

Liversedge were still creating chances; Alex Wollerton dragged a shot just wide from a knockdown, then a Boateng volley was blocked, and the ball was scrambled clear.

A determined rearguard action meant Consett were still in the game going into the last few minutes. They kept probing for an equaliser, and the breakthrough came in the 87th minute when Jake Orrell’s cross came back off the woodwork and bounced in off the unfortunate Kurt Harris for an own goal.

The handful of Consett fans present would have been happy with a point, but a minute later their team snatched what would prove to be the winning goal.

Orrell drove forward from midfield and fed the ball to Wil Shaw, whose shot took a deflection off Joe Skarz on its way into the back of the net, sparking wild celebrations from the visitors.

There was one added time scare at the other end, with a huge goalmouth scramble in the six-yard box, but Consett hung on for their fifth away win of the season, which took them back up to third place.
