Bridlington Town v Consett

Consett’s four-match winning run came to an end in disappointing fashion when they were well beaten 3-0 at Bridlington Town.

The day started badly when the team coach was held up by traffic congestion, which meant a delayed kick-off, and in truth Consett never seemed to recover from the disruption to their preparations.

Tony Fawcett’s team was down to the bare bones due to injury and suspension, which meant a first start of the season for Adam Mitchell. With Matty Slocombe and Kaleb Young suspended, Ryan McKinnon also returned to the starting line-up.

Consett looked sluggish from the start, and Bridlington had their first chance just four minutes in. Lewis Dennison drove past McKinnon before squaring the ball to Ali Aydemir, but the ball took reared up in front of him and he ballooned it over the bar.

Six minutes later the same pair linked up again, with Dennison’s flick-on finding Aydemir, but the winger dragged his first-time effort wide of the left-hand post.

Consett created their first chance in the 11th minute, when Josh Baggs’ cross from the right found Mitchell, but he couldn’t get over the ball properly, and his effort didn’t unduly trouble James Hitchcock.

Bridlington were doing most of the attacking, and a foul on Glen Sani gave them a free-kick 20 yards from goal. Andy Norfolk took it, and James Anderson made a good save, diving low to his left to prevent the ball creeping inside the post.

But there was little he could do to prevent Bridlington opening the scoring from the resulting corner. Norfolk’s deep delivery was headed back into the danger area by Jack Walters, and skipper James Williamson was quickest to react to head home from close range.

Another Norfolk corner again found Walters at the back post as Bridlington sought to increase their lead, but this time he could only head straight at Anderson.

But the home side’s advantage was doubled on the brink of half time, when Consett lost possession from a throw-in on the left. Lewis Dennison, who’d caused problems from the start, went on a bustling run, which ended with him beating Anderson at his near post for 2-0.

Half-time: Bridlington Town 2 Consett 0

Two goals down at half-time, Consett had a mountain to climb, but almost regained a foothold back in the game on 49 minutes when Jake Orrell’s pass found Dan Capewell, whose well-struck shot came back off the post.

The miss was to prove crucial, as Bridlington broke quickly through dangerman Ali Aydemir, whose cross found Glen Sani at the back post. His shot was deflected, but the ball broke to Matty Dixon, who headed home to make it 3-0.

If a two-goal deficit was difficult to claw back, three goals was impossible, and although Consett huffed and puffed as they sought a lifeline, Bridlington saw out the game with ease.

The home side, who were one of the division’s form teams with four wins in their last five games, had further chances through a Walter free-kick, which Anderson saved comfortably, and debutant Harry Milner, who fired just wide.

But Consett, who gave a late debut as sub to latest signing Jack Caygill, managed to see out the game without any further damage, and, thanks to some bizarre results elsewhere, remained fourth in the table.
