Report

Consett moved to within a point of the top two in the NPL Division One East with an excellent 2-0 win at fellow play-off contenders Pontefract Collieries.

A goal in each half gave Tony Fawcett’s side a richly-deserved three points as they avenged a defeat by the same scoreline in a replayed game at Belle View in September.

They took the lead on 31 minutes thanks to Ben Ramsey‘s seventh goal of the season. He was sent clear by a superb pass from Kaleb Young and raced clear to beat the keeper at his near post.

There was a sense of deja vu from the abandoned game at Consett when six of the eight floodlights went out with a minute of added time left to play in the first half.

The referee had no option but to take the teams off the field, and after a half-hour break in which a main fuse had to be located and replaced, the game resumed, turning straight round for the second half after the first half was concluded.

Pontefract bombarded the visitors’ penalty area with long balls, but a superb defensive performance by all 11 Steelmen repelled everything they threw at them.

The points were secured on the 72nd minute when Scott Fenwick hit the bar with a header, the ball was recycled and Arjun Purewal rose highest to head home from point-blank range and make it 2-0.

Two goals almost became three right at the death when Ponte keeper Lloyd Allinson was sent off for handling the ball outside his area to illegally halt Ramsey, and Jake Orrell smashed the resulting free-kick against the post, with the stand-in keeper well beaten.

It mattered not, because when the final whistle went a couple of minutes later, it was Consett who were celebrated three hard-earned points with their jubilant, noisy fans behind the goal.
