Consett v Bridlington Town

Report

Consett ended their second season in the Northern Premier League with a 1-1 draw against third-bottom Bridlington Town, who secured the point they needed to avoid relegation.

Tony Fawcett made two changes to the side which had narrowly lost at Carlton the previous week, with skipper Matty Slocombe and Zak Atkinson starting. He also had the luxury of four subs, though Jack Gibbons (suspended) and James Anderson (unavailable) were missing.

Consett started brightly, and Kaleb Young gave them the lead on six minutes with his first league goal of the season. Zak Atkinson’s pass sent him clear, and though his touch looked to have let him down, hesitancy by keeper James Hitchcock allowed him to finish from close range.

Hitchcock made amends by saving Jake Jensen’s 25-yarder in the 12th minute, and five minutes later top scorer Wil Shaw could have doubled Consett’s lead from Calvin Smith’s clever pass, but fired over from six yards out.

Shaw was also denied a penalty when he appeared to have been dragged down by a defender, but the referee waved away his appeal.

After riding the hosts’ early storm, Bridlington created their first chance midway through the half, but Glen Sani snatched at it and fired wide.

But the visitors levelled on 31 minutes when Consett failed to deal with a corner, and when the ball was recycled, Benn Lewis‘s header was adjudged to have crossed the line before Ben Milburn cleared.

The goal sparked the Seasiders; best spell of the game, and they had further chances through Lewis Dennison, whose shot was easily saved, and Andy Norfolk, who blazed wide.

Consett had a chance to regain the lead four minutes before half-time from a free-kick 25 yards out, but Young couldn’t keep his effort down, and the interval arrived with the sides all-square.

Half-time: Consett 1 Bridlington Town 1

Sani thought he’d put Bridlington ahead two minutes into the second half, but was ruled offside, then skipper James Williamson volleyed wide from a corner as, with bottom two Brighouse Town and Winterton Rangers both leading at half-time, they sought the cushion of a second goal.

They had a golden chance on 55 minutes after Smith’s clumsy challenge on Dennison gave the visitors a penalty, but when the striker picked himself up to take it, his spot kick was saved by Sunderland U23s loanee keeper Kelechi Chibueze.

Hitchcock flung himself at full stretch to turn away Charlie Watt’s cross-shot, then denied Atkinson a farewell goal as Consett upped their game after the penalty let-off.

Dan Capewell put a header straight at the keeper from Young’s corner, then Watt headed wide from Arjun Purewal’s cross as Consett looked to end their season with a win.

Chibueze thwarted Pete Davidson at the other end after a mazy run, and Consett sub Ben Ramsey drilled a free-kick into the wall, but the game fizzled out in the last 20 minutes and a point apiece at the end was about right.

Bridlington’s draw meant they stayed up on goal difference, despite full-time confirmation of wins for Brighouse and Winterton.

Consett finished 12th with 49 points – a place and three points better off than last season – but were left to reflect on a poor second half of the season which saw them win just one of their last 16 games and their play-off challenge fall away.
