Report

A three-goal blast in the opening 20 minutes set Consett up for a season’s best 4-0 win over struggling Bridlington Town at a sunny Belle View Stadium.

Despite being without top scorer Isaac Walker, they scored with their first three shots on goal to put them well and truly in control.

They took the lead after eight minutes when David Allasan played in Donny Holdsworth, and the No 9 finished expertly into the far corner past on-loan Sheffield Wednesday U21s keeper Jack Hall to end his four-game lean spell.

On 14 minutes the Steelmen doubled their lead. Jake Orrell’s crossfield pass picked out David Allasan, who brought the ball down with his first touch and rifled it past Hall with his second.

Orrell headed off the line as Bridlington threatened to get one back from a corner, and within 30 seconds had set up Consett’s third goal, playing the ball forward for Donny Holdsworth to run onto, and beat the advancing keeper with a superb lob. The goal was his 15th of the season – the same as Walker.

Bridlington were shellshocked at the quickfire treble, but slowly settled, and had a chance of 25 minutes when Dan Hartley crossed for Benn Lewis, but his header cleared the bar. Their best chance came on the stroke of half-time, but home keeper Harry Moss stood up well to deny Sam Leverett.

Half-time: Consett 3 Bridlington Town 0

Consett started the second half well, and almost increased their lead in the 48th minute when Orrell’s pass found Holdsworth, who was the width of the crossbar away from completing a first hat-trick for the club.

Bridlington, desperate for points to escape the bottom four, dominated after that, without creating any clear-cut chances. Charlie Winfield fired over from an angle and Tom Allan scuffed an effort over as they sought a way back into the game.

But it was Consett who created the better chances: Calvin Smith was close to converting an excellent Allasan cross and Will Constantin headed just wide from a Charlie Exley corner.

Bridlington almost grabbed a consolation at the death when Michael Coulson headed over from Winfield’s cross, but it was Consett who rounded off the scoring in the second minute of injury time.

It was a first goal for 17-year-old sub Matty Todd, making his home debut. He latched onto a Ryan McKinnon pass and kept his cool to beat Hall in a one-on-one with the keeper to make it 4-0.
