Consett gave their supporters some early Christmas cheer, coming from behind to send Sherwood home empty-handed on their first-ever visit to Belle View.

Manager Jason Miller made just one change to the side which had drawn at Stocksbridge the previous week – Jake Orrell returning in place of Jordan Patterson, with Calvin Smith reverting to right-back.

After a minute’s applause in memory of supporter Garry Robson, who died while on holiday last weekend, the game kicked off in terrible conditions which got worse as the game went on, with the wind making playing football impossible at times.

With the wind at their back, it was Sherwood took the lead on 19 minutes when Jordan Addo-Antoine’s ball in from the left was unluckily turned past his own keeper by defender Charlie Exley.

But Jason Miller’s side showed real resilience, coming from behind to claim their third win in their last four games.

Visiting keeper Jordan Pierrepont made an excellent save from Isaac Walker to maintain their lead, then Consett had a big penalty shout for handball against centre-back Jaz Goundry turned down, and it stayed 1-0 at the break.

Consett, now with the wind at their back, dominated the second half. Pierrepont made a fine save from Orrell, another strong penalty appeal was turned down when Dom Curl appealed to be fouled at a corner, and Walker had a shot deflected just wide.

Consett’s top scorer Donny Holdsworth levelled from the penalty spot on 76 minutes after Walker was barged over from behind, and four minutes later saw a great effort headed off the line by Goundry.

But the Steelmen persevered and got the winner in the first minute of added time when sub Wil Shaw fired home from 18 yards to give them their third win in four games.

The win moved Consett up a place in the NPL Division One East to 12th, and sent their freezing fans home happy after another good performance.
