Consett slumped to a fourth successive Northern Premier League defeat as they were beaten 1-0 at home by lowly Newton Aycliffe, with former Steelman Scott Fenwick scoring the winner.

Depleted Consett gave a debut to young midfielder Ewan McGowan, pictured top, signed on a short-term loan from South Shields, and had another new face, Callan Stocks, from manager Jason Miller’s Newcastle Elite Academy, on the bench.

Ben Ramsey, who passed a late fitness test, looked Consett’s best bet for a goal in the first half. He had one effort deflected over by a defender, and another curling effort just cleared the bar.

Aycliffe had half-chances through Jack Clarkson and Tom Henson, and they got their noses in front after a quick break down the left in the 34th minute.

Jack Robertson’s cross found Scott Fenwick in space, and his first-time shot beat home keeper Harry Moss. It was to prove the visitors’ only shot on target in the entire game.

Consett almost equalised two minutes before half-time, but Ramsey was denied by Aycliffe keeper Kyle Seymour, who managed to push the ball out of the path of the following-in Donny Holdsworth.

The second half saw Matty Todd have Consett’s two best chances, with one skewed wide after good work by Marc Costello, and the other clutched by the keeper as he tried to bend a shot into the top corner.

For the second game running Consett ended the game with 10 men. Again it was Costello who saw red, after being shown a second yellow card for kicking an opponent as his frustration got the better of him.

It was a sour end to a disappointing night as Consett, badly missing key players, lost to a bottom-four side for the second game in a row.
