Consett’s hopes of a money-spinning FA Cup run were blown away as they lost 2-0 to a clinical Guisborough Town in a replay at a blustery Belle View.

They became the fifth Northern Premier League East side to lose to lower-ranked opposition in the Extra Preliminary Round after being made to pay for not taking their chances.

Jason Miller made one change to the side which had drawn at Guisborough, with Calvin Smith coming in for Dean Armstrong, which meant Will Constantin dropping into the back four.

The Steelmen had a strong wind at their backs in the first half and had four good opportunities to take the lead for the first time in the tie, having twice come from behind in the weekend’s 2-2 draw.

In the 15th minute good work by Ben Ramsey down the left teed up Donny Holdsworth, but the striker stubbed his shot just wide.

Matty Todd had a chance on 26 minutes, hitting a great effort from 25 yards, but was denied by a fine save by Town keeper Ryan Catterick, who tipped the ball over the bar. Catterick was perhaps lucky to receive just a yellow card in the 35th minute for handling the ball outside the box to prevent Holdsworth getting past him on the right edge of the area.

And the keeper made another key save a minute before half-time, flinging himself to his right to push the ball round the post to keep out Ramsey’s curling effort after a mazy run.

From the resulting setpiece Ramsey had another chance when the ball was half-cleared to him at the edge of the box, but he fired just over.

The score remained 0-0 at half-time, but four minutes into the second half Guisborough took the lead, when midfielder Joe Ferguson hit an absolute screamer from distance which gave Harry Moss no chance.

Ten minutes later it was 2-0, as striker Sonni Coleman turned and fired into the top corner, putting the visitors well in control.

Midway through the half Consett had a chance to get a foothold back in the game when good work by Ramsey and Holdsworth set up Todd, but he skewed his effort wide.

Consett huffed and puffed for the rest of the game but created little against a well-organised and resolute visiting defence.
When the final whistle went they were out of the cup at the first hurdle for the third time in four years.
