Consett were well beaten in their third pre-season game, with an under-strength side proving no match for a very good Spennymoor Town side at a soggy Belle View.

Moors finished 8th in the National League North last season, just a point outside the play-off places, and the two-division gap between the sides was evident, as Consett created little of note all afternoon.

But Tony Fawcett’s Steelmen improved after a shaky start, which saw them go two goals down in the opening minutes to a slick Spennymoor outfit.

Glen Taylor gave the visitors a dream start after just 27 seconds, lobbing oncoming goalkeeper Cieran Ure, and a trialist forward made it 2-0 after four minutes, with Taylor playing a great ball through for the No 14 to finish low past the exposed keeper.

On 30 minutes the trialist forward made it 3-0, whipping a wonderful 30-yard free-kick over the wall and into the top corner, giving Ure no chance.

Consett stepped up their game after the break, but still found chances hard to come by against a well-drilled Spenny defence.

It was 4-0 on 77 minutes, when Reece Staunton attacked down the right flank, cut inside and unleashed a superb 20-yarder into the top corner, again giving Consett’s sub keeper Elliott Clayton no chance.

Junior Mondal completed the scoring on 86 minutes, firing a powerful shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
