Consett stumble to a poor home defeat against relegation-threatened Brighouse

Consett’s recent poor run of results continued tonight when they were beaten 2-0 at home by relegation-threatened Brighouse Town.

It was the West Yorkshire side’s fourth win in four games against the Steelmen, and lifted them out of the bottom two.

Consett started brightly enough, and Ben Ramsey should have given them the lead after seven minutes when he latched onto Kaleb Young’s pass and headed the ball beyond the onrushing keeper, but shot wide with the goal gaping.

They had the ball in the net on 19 minutes when Ryan McKinnon headed home from Young’s free-kick, only to be flagged offside.

Then Dan Capewell was unlucky not to score in the 27th minute when great work by Wil Shaw saw his header come back off the bar, pictured top.

But Brighouse took the lead on 38 minutes as Consett failed to deal with a short corner and Joshua Dacre fired home at the back post.

It remained 1-0 at the break, and Ramsey had two good chances to level early in the second half, but saw the first saved at the near post and headed the second straight at the keeper from eight yards out.

As has been the case so often this season, they were made to pay for missed chances when Jack Wilson made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute from another corner.

Arjun Purewal came close to grabbing a consolation goal in added time when his 25-yarder glanced off the top of the bar, but Consett rarely troubled their opponents in the last half hour, and Brighouse were worthy winners.

Consett’s survival bid goes to the wire after they lose at Brighouse Town

Consett’s quest for a point to guarantee Northern Premier League football next season will go to the last game after they lost 2-0 at Brighouse Town today.

With Arjun Purewal and Dan Capewell injured and Ben Milburn suspended, the Steelmen were without all three central defenders, and top scorer Zak Atkinson was also missing through injury.

They lined up with midfielder Matty Slocombe and striker Scott Fenwick at the heart of their back four, and Danny Barlow and Nathan Greenwood up front.

Brighouse had already missed early chances for Mohammed Ibrahim and Javelle Clarke before Consett’s injury list got even longer on 10 minutes when midfielder Scott Jasper limped off.

Barlow had a chance to put Consett ahead on 15 minutes when he latched onto Fenwick’s pass, but was denied by Brighouse keeper Jamie Hassall.

As has been the case all too often this season the missed chance proved costly, as a minute later the home side took the lead when Jack Boyle cut in from the right and hit a hard, low drive past Mark Foden.

Consett almost equalised midway through the first half when Barlow set up Josh Baggs, but Hassall again made a good save, and Barlow then headed wide from Fenwick’s deep cross.

Despite being 1-0 down at half-time, Consett were still in the game, but they didn’t really get going after the break and found themselves penned back for long spells, with Brighouse peppering their goal.

The pressure told in the 63rd minute when Joshua Grant fired an unstoppable shot past Foden from 25 yards to make it 2-0.

Consett laboured for a way back, but created little apart from a late half-chance for sub Oscar Taylor, while Brighouse were happy to see out the win, which guaranteed their own NPL status.

Victories for Lincoln and Grantham and an unlikely draw for Ossett at champions Worksop mean Consett drop a place to 14th, and still need a point in their last game to be sure of not being involved in the end of season play-offs.

That last game is versus fellow battlers Lincoln at Belle View Stadium on Saturday 22 April, kick-off 3pm.

Consett beaten by Brighouse in new manager Tony Fawcett’s first home game

Consett slumped to a 4-1 defeat to Brighouse Town today in new manager Tony Fawcett’s first home game.

The visitors took the lead in the 21st minute when Laurence Sorhaindo went on a solo run which took him past three players before firing home.

On the half hour they doubled their advantage through Jack Boyle, and two minutes before half-time the visitors took complete control of the game with a third goal.

Consett midfielder Matty Slocombe handled a goalbound shot in the six-yard box, for which he was yellow carded, and Sorhaindo converted the resulting penalty.

The Steelmen were given a lifeline back into the game on 51 minutes when Brighouse skipper Corey Gregory was sent off for handling Adam Mitchell’s shot on the line.

Zak Atkinson scored his ninth goal of the season from the spot to make it 3-1 and give the Steelmen hope of a comeback.

Brighouse keeper Brett Souter made good saves from Mitchell and Declan Bisset as Consett tried to make the most of their one-man advantage.

But the visitors had the final word when a quick break saw Sorhaindo set up sub Callum Charlton to clinch the win with a goal in the third minute of added time.

The result means Consett’s winless run now stretches to 12 games, and they dropped three places in the table to 16th.
