And with supporters allowed back into Belle View Stadium, a good crowd was able to see the young midfielder’s superbly-executed 40-yarder, pictured top, which was the difference between the two sides.
Consett manager Terry Mitchell used the game to give his full squad some minutes, with the exception of in-form striker Dale Pearson, who was rested ahead of next week’s FA Vase tie v West Auckland.
The Steelmen took the lead on 13 minutes when Darren Holden played the ball inside to Ali Alshabeeb, who found the far corner from the edge of the box with the help of a deflection.
Crook equalised on the half-hour when Corey Nicholson, who had a spell at Consett a few seasons ago, cut in from the right and his shot beat Kyle Hayes with the help of a huge deflection off Holden.
The visitors almost took the lead four minutes before half-time when Jamie Tumilty hit the post.
But it was Consett who went in 2-1 ahead at the break when Luke Carr’s left-wing corner in added time produced a bit of a scramble, and Calvin Smith fired home.
Consett rang the changes for the second half, making six substitutions, and it was one of the newcomers, Dan Marriott, who scored what turned out t be the winning goal in the 54th minute.
Crook goalkeeper Ronan Makepeace rushed out of his area to beat Jermaine Metz to a through ball, but his headed clearance only went as far as Marriott.
The young midfielder, who has impressed enormously in his performances this season, showed tremendous vision, confidence and technique to lob the ball into the empty net from about 40 yards – the sort of goal Calvin Smith has scored a few of over the years.
To Crook’s credit they responded well, and on 74 minutes they got a goal back when Joey Smith scored with a back-post header from a left-wing cross.
Consett had further chances in the closing stages through Nick Allen, Luke Carr and Matty Cornish, but couldn’t add to the scoreline, and an entertaining, well-contested game finished 3-2.
Consett have today been given the go-ahead for the return of home spectators to Belle View Stadium.

A guidance note issued by The FA said: “It is extremely important that spectators remain in their household or social bubble in groups of six, do not mix with any other spectator groups, or travel between tiers to attend fixtures, as enforceable by law.
“If breaches of spectator limits or social distancing are reported, clubs and leagues may face returning to fixtures being held behind closed doors.”
Consett had to settle for a 0-0 draw with Crook Town today in their latest behind-closed-doors pre-season friendly at a sun-drenched Belle View.
Terry Mitchell’s side were missing five attacking players for a variety of reasons, so it was no surprise they struggled to break down a well-organised visiting side.
Michael Mackay and Lewis Green had shots on target in an evenly-matched first half, but didn’t trouble keeper Ronan Makepeace, while Jamie Tumilty had Crook’s best attempt with a 25-yard free-kick.
The second half saw both sides make a multitude of changes, and one of Consett’s subs, Nick Allen, went close with an effort which Makepeace saved well down at his near post.
Keeper Kyle Hayes was twice called into action as Crook showed the attacking prowess which took them to third in the 2nd Division before last season was declared null and void.
But the best chance of all fell to young centre-back Simon Jakab, who rose highest to meet a right-wing corner in the 63rd minute, but powered his header straight at the keeper, pictured top.
Consett will play one of the Northern League’s oldest clubs, Crook Town, as part of their pre-season preparations, it has been confirmed.
The Black and Ambers were 3rd in the 2nd Division, and looked a good bet for promotion, when last season was abandoned.
They will visit Belle View Stadium on Saturday, 8 August, but under current Covid-19 restrictions the game will be behind closed doors.
The meeting will be our first since 21 March 2015, when we won 4-0 at their Millfield ground in a 1st Division fixture.
Our goals that day were a hat-trick from Michael Mackay, pictured in action above, and a strike from Aris Guerin-Lokonga.
Crook are managed by Jamie Tunstall, a young manager who encourages his team to play good football. Their squad includes Harrison Scott, a defender who had a spell at Consett in the 2017-18 season.
Their main goal threat is Daniel Kent, who’d scored 20 when last season was brought to an abrupt halt, while Christian Holliday (16) and Daniel Maddison (10) were also in double figures.
Our pre-season schedule so far is:
Sat 1 August v Newcastle Blue Star (A)
Tue 4 August v Tow Law Town (H)
Sat 8 August v Crook Town (H)
Sat 22 August v Morpeth Town (H)
At present, all friendly games must take place behind closed doors, and we await updated guidance from the FA/Government on when spectators will be allowed to return.
Consett won their first major trophy for 26 years on this day in 1995, enjoying a comfortable victory over favourites Whitby Town in the Northern League Cup final.
And it was fourth time lucky for the Steelmen, who had been beaten finalists in their previous three finals, in 1979, 1981 and 1992.
It was the second trophy which long-serving manager Colin Carr would deliver to Belle Vue Park, following the 2nd Division championship in his first season, 1988-89.
And it would pave the way for further success, with a run to the 1st Round proper of the FA Cup in 1996, and a Sunderland Shipowners Cup win in 1998 (recalled here).
Although Consett had finished a creditable 9th in the season just ended, they were up against one of the Northern League’s big guns of the time.
Whitby had just missed out on being league runners-up by goal difference, and had recorded their fifth consecutive top-six finish, which included being crowned champions in 1993.
They had enjoyed the upper hand in the two league meetings between the sides during the season, winning 2-0 at the Turnbull Ground the previous October, with the return match at Belle Vue in March ending 1-1.
So for although by the time of this game, played at Crook Town’s Millfield, Consett were an established 1st Division side, they went into it very much as underdogs.
And, as Ian Hamilton (who was club secretary at the time) revealed this week, the Steelmen’s preparations for the game weren’t exactly orthodox.
He said: “The Consett squad had just endured their end of season booze-a-thon, which was a two-day booze-filled weekend at Southport.
“I think 9 of the squad for the cup final were on that trip and there were no beer shirkers! I don’t know how the lads managed to even turn up for that game, never mind win it!”
But win it they did, despite having a scare early on, when Paul Quinn had to clear an effort off the line after goalkeeper Dickie Lee had made a fine save.
David Bayles shot into the side netting after 22 minutes, and then his pass put Gary Cowley in the clear six minutes later. ‘G.C.’ lobbed the ball over the keeper, but unfortunately also over the bar.
Robinson headed just over for Whitby after 29 minutes, and then a mistake by Johnny Brown let Robinson in, but Lee again came to the rescue with a good save.
Consett made the vital breakthrough three minutes before half-time. Colin McLeod made a good run down the left and his excellent pass found Paul Staff, who drew the keeper before firing into the net from 10 yards.
Whitby went close after 52 minutes when Lee saved from Pitman, but the expected pressure from the Seasiders failed to materialise, as they strangely lacked urgency.
McLeod forced a save from keeper Robinson after 68 minutes, and then Consett clinched the game with 13 minutes left on the clock. Carl Rowell latched onto a loose ball to superbly lob it over the advancing keeper and make it 2-0.
There was almost a third goal two minutes later when substitute Gary Davies shot narrowly wide after playing a one-two with McLeod, but it mattered not, as Consett held on for a comfortable win.
Skipper Gary Cowley collected the League Cup – their first major honour since 1969 – from MP Hilary Armstrong, and then the celebrations could really begin!
