Dan’s the man as Consett make cup progress by coming from behind to beat North Shields

Dan Marriott proved to be Consett’s matchwinner as a much-changed side came from behind to win a hard-fought Division One Cup tie 3-2 at North Shields tonight.

But it was another Dan – goalkeeper Daniel Staples, making his first appearance for the club in 11 years – who ensured the Steelmen progressed to the 2nd Round.

With first-choice keeper Kyle Hayes taken ill and his deputy Ross Coombe unavailable due to work, the 31-year-old answered the club’s SOS to don a first-team jersey for the first time since August 2011.

His big moment came in the 86th minute, when North Shields, pushing hard for an equaliser, were awarded a penalty.

The Robins’ top scorer Dan Wilson stepped up to take the kick, but Staples pulled off a brilliant save, diving low to his right, and the follow-up was blazed over the bar.

It was a dramatic end to a game which saw both sides make full use of their squads, resting several players for more important fixtures in the weeks ahead.

Shields took the lead after just two minutes when David Robinson cut in from the right and hit a low shot which took a deflection off a defender, giving Staples no chance.

Consett levelled on 14 minutes through Calvin Smith, who picked up possession 30 yards out after good work by Darren Holden, and fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

On 27 minutes Consett took the lead, Darren Holden scoring direct from a corner, with Shields keeper Greg Purvis seeming to misjudge the flight of the ball, which dipped over him into the far corner.

And five minutes before half-time the Steelmen looked firmly in control when Nick Cassidy whipped in a disputed free-kick from the right, and Dan Marriott flashed home a header from eight yards.

The second half saw the home side step up their game, and they made it 3-2 in the 54th minute when David Robinson scored his second of the night, reacting quickly after a cross-shot by JJ Chrisp fell to him.

Shields spurned a great chance to level when Regan Paterson broke through but fired wide on 68 minutes, and 10 minutes later Cameron Cunningham had another golden opportunity, but lobbed over the bar.

Then came the late penalty drama, with Staples emerging as Consett’s hero. After five added-on minutes of backs-to-the-wall defending, it was the Steelmen who progressed to meet Redcar Athletic in the next round.

Dale double gets Consett’s new era off to a winning start

Two goals from top scorer Dale Pearson got Consett’s interim manager Andy Coyles off to a winning start tonight as they beat Whickham 2-1 at Belle View Stadium.

But the Steelmen had to do it the hard way in their first game since former manager Terry Mitchell and his assistant Graeme Coulson left for Blyth Spartans.

Whickham took the lead against the run of play in the 19th minute when Zak Atkinson converted a right-wing cross from close range.

Consett responded well, with Luke carr firing just wide, Colin Larkin forcing the keeper into a good save at his near post, and Larkin again heading just wide from Jake Orrell’s cross.

But they levelled in the 41st minute when Whickham right-back Ryan Bolton hauled down Olly Scott, and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot.

Striker Dale Pearson stepped up to take it, and calmly slotted home his 17th goal of the season to make it 1-1.

Right in half-time Consett almost took the lead when Arjun Purewal flicked on a ball into the box, and James Martin’s header beat the keeper but came back off the post into his arms.

It remained 1-1 at the break, but Consett took just five minutes of the second half to get what proved to be the matchwinning goal.

When Whickham’s keeper could only parry Orrell’s well-struck 25-yarder, Larkin was first to the rebound to square for Dale Pearson to net from a few yards out, pictured top.

The big striker thought he had his first hat-trick of the season two minutes later when he beat the keeper to a loose ball after Larkin’s shot was blocked, but he was ruled offside.

The only black spot of the night came in the 85th minute when Dan Marriott, who came on as a sub for Darren Holden just before half-time, was sent off.

He was shown two yellow cards in the space of five minutes, first for kicking the ball away, and then for a fairly innocuous foul. Sadly, the red card which followed rules him out of next weekend’s FA Vase game at Newcastle Benfield.

The majority of the bumper Friday night crowd of 568 headed home even happier when they heard that second-placed West Auckland Town had unexpectedly lost, 5-3 at home to West Allotment Celtic. That means Consett are now 10 points clear at the top of Division One.

Late penalty sees stuttering Consett make FA Vase progress

Consett edged through to the 2nd Round of the FA Vase after a late penalty saw them beat Atherton Laburnum Rovers 2-1.

The North West Counties League visitors made the out-of-sorts Steelmen fight all the way for the victory, and had a couple of chances to win it themselves.

Terry Mitchell’s side were without top scorer Dale Pearson, whose red card against North Shields last week was upheld by the FA, meaning he will miss four games.

But they took the lead on 27 minutes through his replacement in the No 9 shirt, Colin Larkin, who finished from a few yards out, pictured below, after a great through ball by Jermaine Metz.

Luke Carr almost doubled the lead on 38 minutes after being set up by Jake Orrell, but his shot crashed back off the bar with the keeper beaten.

It remained 1-0 at the break, but a half-time substitution and change of formation paid dividends for Atherton, who became much more of a threat, and equalised in the 68th minute.

Consett gave the ball away cheaply in their own half, and Travis Boyles played the ball through to Yacin Amarzou, who slotted it home.

Three minutes later the home side could have gone behind, as Boyles was played clean through, but shanked his shot high and wide.

Consett had a good penalty shout turned down on 85 minutes when sub Dan Marriott was barged over from behind by Atherton defender Tom Horner.

A minute later Atherton had another chance to win the game when Boyles was again played in, but Consett keeper Kyle Hayes made a vital save with his feet.

The game’s deciding moment came on 88 minutes when Consett were awarded a spot-kick, after the referee decided left-back Kaydn Craven had handled Carr’s goalbound effort on the line.

The defender was red carded, despite his protestations that the ball had hit him in the face, and Luke Carr stepped up to make it 2-1 from the spot, pictured top, and send Consett through to Monday’s draw.

Pearson leads the way with a treble as Consett put on five-star show at Crook

Consett sent out a powerful statement tonight after their weekend wobble, winning 5-0 at Crook Town to restore their six-point lead at the top of the Northern League.

Top scorer Dale Pearson led the way with a hat-trick after being restored to the starting line-up as one of six changes from the previous game.

Ryan King was given his first start since returning to the club in the summer, and Darren Holden, James Metcalfe, Dan Marriott and Callum Guy also came into the XI.

Dale Pearson took just three minutes to make his mark, sweeping the ball home from close range from Jermaine Metz’s pinpoint cross.

On 15 minutes Consett took control when another of the newcomers, young centre-back James Metcalfe, came in at the back post, pictured below, to finish Luke Carr’s superbly-delivered free-kick.

On 29 minutes it was 3-0 when Jake Orrell’s corner from the right was headed home by yet another of the changes, Ryan King, who outjumped his man.

Five minutes later the result was beyond doubt when the Crook keeper made a fine double save from Carr and then Guy, but was helpless to stop Dale Pearson scoring his second of the night.

It remained 4-0 at half-time, and four minutes into the second half Dale Pearson completed his hat-trick, taking the ball round the keeper, pictured top, after super play by Marriott.

It was almost six on 69 minutes, when Guy hit the post and the rebound fell to King, whose shot was cleared off the line by some excellent defending.

But Consett settled for 5-0, and a home defeat for fellow title hopefuls North Shields at the hands of Ryhope CW meant it was a good night all round.

A special mention should go to the Conny Army, who once again travelled in large numbers, giving Crook a bumper attendance of 503 – by far their biggest so far this season.

Consett’s next game is on Saturday, 23 October, when they host Atherton Laburnum Rovers from the North West Counties League in the 1st Round of the FA Vase at Belle View Stadium. Kick-off is 3pm, and supporters are reminded that season tickets are not valid for cup matches. Admission will be £7 for adults, £5 for OAPs and £2 for under-16s.

Consett win at Whickham takes them back to the top of the table

Consett returned to the top of Northern League Division One tonight after a commanding 2-0 win at near-neighbours Whickham.

The result, and a surprise 1-0 defeat for Newton Aycliffe at Seaham Red Star, means the Steelmen are top on goal difference.

Terry Mitchell’s side put in an excellent performance at the First Mortgage Glebe Sports Ground, despite being without six first-teamers through injury.

It meant a debut for one new signing, Oliver Scott, at left-back, while a second, James Martin, was on the bench.

Consett took the game to their hosts from the start, and Whickham could count themselves lucky not to be reduced to 10 men on 19 minutes when Dale Pearson robbed centre-back Ben Milburn of possession.

The No 6 pulled him back, and was clearly last man, but the referee saw fit to punish him only with a yellow card instead of red.

Two minutes later the lively Dan Marriott tried his luck from outside the box, and was unlucky to see his shot come back off the post, with the keeper beaten.

Consett took the lead on 23 minutes with a stunning strike from Calvin Smith, who let fly from 35 yards, pictured top, giving Jack Norton no chance.

On 36 minutes it was almost two when Stephen Callen played Pearson in, but this time Milburn got back to clear, though Consett claimed the ball had crossed the line.

On 63 minutes the visitors did double their lead when Jermaine Metz played an excellent one-two with half-time sub Callum Guy, before slipping the ball past Norton.

Norton made a good save from Guy’s 25-yarder to prevent him making it three, and Pearson had another effort cleared off the line, which the away fans behind the goal were convinced should have been a goal.

Sub Ryan King’s through ball gave Guy a chance to wrap up the points with a one-on-one three minutes from the end, but he was again denied by Norton.

The final score of 2-0 didn’t come close to summing up how in control of the game Consett were, as keeper Kyle Hayes didn’t have a serious save to make.

Next up for the Steelmen is a home FA Cup tie on Saturday against Bridlington Town, who lost their opening Northern Premier League East game tonight, 2-0 at Yorkshire Amateur.

Consett suffer late agony against Aycliffe in battle of top two

Consett’s 100% start to the season came to an end today, when they lost 3-2 to Newton Aycliffe in dramatic late fashion.

A goal from Liam Jarvie two minutes before half-time gave the visitors the lead at Belle View Stadium, against the run of play.

Chances came and went for both sides in the second half, and another supersub appearance by evergreen striker Colin Larkin, pictured top, looked like it had rescued a point for the Steelmen.

He reacted first when Aycliffe keeper Adam Pickford could only parry Dan Marriott’s shot in the 85th minute, and grabbed a deserved equaliser.

It looked like the game would end honours even, with the sides getting a point apiece and the status quo maintained.

But things took a late twist when Aycliffe were awarded a penalty in the second of four scheduled added minutes.

Keeper Kyle Hayes saved Sonni Coleman‘s spot kick, but the striker reacted quickest to net the rebound and gave the visitors a 2-1 lead.

Things got even worse for Consett when Darren Holden was sent off. Then Hayes then got caught in possession, which allowed Coleman to nick a third goal in the fourth added minute.

Consett did get one back in the seventh minute of added time, when Dale Pearson scored from the penalty spot to make the final score 3-2.

The result means Newton Aycliffe go top, and wins for North Shields and Thornaby mean Consett will head to Whickham on Tuesday night in 4th place.

The crowd at Belle View was a season’s best 554. The next home game is next Saturday, 21 August, when we face Bridlington Town in the FA Cup.

Consett go top after beating West Allotment Celtic 5-0

Consett are top of the Northern League Division on goal difference tonight after thumping West Allotment Celtic 5-0 at Belle View Stadium.

The Steelmen made it four wins from four games, with a two-goal blast either side of half-time doing most of the damage against their newly-promoted visitors.

It was a night of firsts, with Dan Marriott getting his first goal for the club, James Metcalfe making his first start, and Harry Pilkington and Drew Lake being given competitive debuts as subs.

Striker Dale Pearson joined the select band of players who have scored 50 goals for the club, and the goal of the night came from Luke Carr – a superb half-volley from a perfect pass by Pearson.

It took 40 minutes for Terry Mitchell’s side to break down his old club, and when the goal came it was a good one.

Carl Lawson’s pass from the left picked out Dan Marriott, and the young midfielder smashed the ball home from eight yards for his first senior goal for the club.

Three minutes later it was 2-0, as Carr’s right-wing cross was flicked goalwards by the head of skipper Arjun Purewal,. No one seems quite sure how it crossed the line until we’ve watched back the footage, but a goalkeeping error seems likely.

Eleven minutes into the second half it was 3-0, as Dale Pearson latched onto Jake Orrell’s pass, rounded the keeper, who’d come racing out of his area, and walked the ball into the unguarded net.

Two minutes later the big striker turned provider for the goal of the game, hitting a superb crossfield pass from right to left, which Luke Carr crashed home on the half-volley from 20 yards to make it 4-0, pictured top.

Midway through the half Carr almost grabbed another goal with an audacious lob from the centre circle after spotting the keeper off his line, but his effort was a foot or two off target.

Consett did make it five in the 78th minute when Dale Pearson picked up the ball 30 yards out and hit a firm low shot. The keeper appeared to have it covered, but the ball squirmed through his grasp and over the line.

It was the striker’s third goal of the season, making him our top scorer, and his 50th goal for the club in just his 59th game.

Next up for Consett are Newton Aycliffe, the only other club in the 1st Division with a 100% record this season. Kick-off at Belle View is 3pm on Saturday, and it should be a cracker.

Consett leave it late as second-half subs inspire win at Northallerton

Consett made it two wins out of two as they won their opening away game of the season at Northallerton Town 2-1 tonight.

But it took two second-half goals from substitutes Colin Larkin and Ryan King to secure the points after the Steelmen went behind early on and trailed for almost an hour.

Northallerton went ahead after just three minutes, when veteran striker Michael Rae fired home from a right-wing cross.

He could have added a second against a strangely lacklustre visiting side when he was clean through on 31 minutes, but shot inches wide of the far post.

Consett had plenty of the ball but offered little in the way of real attacking threat in the opening half, and the Northallerton keeper didn’t have a save to make.

They levelled in the 63rd minute when Dale Pearson took down a pass and fired goalwards. His effort looked like it was rolling in, but Colin Larkin, who’d only been on the field a few minutes, made sure to make it 1-1.

He tapped the ball over the line from maybe a foot out to mark his debut appearance with a goal – surely some sort of club record at the age of 39!

A great piece of skill by Dan Marriott then took him to the byline, where he pulled the ball for Pearson, who saw not one but two shots blocked by some determined defending.

Ryan King, who’d come on as a sub midway through the second half, thought he’d won the game for Consett in the second minute of added time.

He bundled the ball over the line after the keeper dropped it under challenge, but the referee decided that skipper Arjun Purewal had fouled him.

But the visitors were not to be denied, and in the 93rd minute Ryan King took advantage of a miskick by the keeper to run through and slot home into an empty net, pictured top, and make the final score 2-1.

The result means Consett are one of only three teams who have won their first two games in Division One of the Northern League. The others are Newton Aycliffe and Newcastle Benfield.

Callum’s the Guy as Consett start the season with a win over Seaham

Consett got their Northern League campaign off to a winning start today, beating a dogged Seaham Red Star 3-1 at Belle View Stadium.

Wearing their new red and black away kit, the Steelmen gave debuts to two of their new signings, left-back Charlie Exley and midfielder Callum Guy.

Both did well, and Guy turned out to be one of the key men in the game, which saw Consett take the lead, pegged back, then take three points with an impressive second-half display.

They opened the scoring in the 26th minute when Carl Lawson took Calvin Smith’s crossfield ball down on his chest, turned, and smashed an unstoppable effort in off the bar from 22 yards, pictured below.

The lead didn’t last long, however, as Seaham equalised two minutes later, with right-back Jordan Patterson getting on the end of Lee Kerr’s cross to glance in a header.

Six minutes before half-time Consett almost restored their lead, when Jake Orrell played in Luke Carr, whose dinked effort was saved by Seaham keeper Andrew Jennison, and centre-back Max Nelson cleared the loose ball before Dale Pearson could take advantage.

It remained 1-1 at the break, and the Steelmen were grateful to keeper Kyle Hayes for saving with his feet from Adam Lennox in the 52nd minute.

Nine minutes later Consett regained the lead with a fine goal. Guy started the move in midfield, spraying the ball out wide for Pearson.

The No.9 made for the byline before pulling the ball back for Callum Guy, who had continued his run into the box, to finish from 10 yards, firing into the roof of the net for 2-1, pictured below.

Consett’s tails were up, and Pearson and Exley both had chances to increase the lead before they scored a third goal to clinch the game in the 79th minute.

This time Guy returned the favour for Dale Pearson, setting up the striker to score from eight yards after seeing the Seaham keeper save his initial effort.

The final scoreline could have been more. Jennison made an excellent save from Orrell, who burst clean through after robbing Kerr in midfield, and sub Dan Marriott curled an effort just wide after Orrell turned provider.

But manager Terry Mitchell was happy enough to get three points on the board, ahead of a week in which his side faces two tricky away games, in the league at Northallerton on Wednesday, then the FA Cup at Whickham on Friday.

New boys shine in the sun as Consett beat Blyth Town

Consett’s new signings shone today as the Steelmen won their latest friendly, beating Blyth Town 6-2 in their latest friendly at a sun-drenched Belle View Stadium.

All six goals against the Northern League newcomers came from players who have been added to Terry Mitchell’s squad since the end of last season.

Consett got off to the best possible start, taking the lead after three minutes when Callum Guy picked up the ball 25 yards out and drilled it into the bottom corner to make it 1-0, pictured below.

But Blyth, who will be making their 2nd Division debut this season, responded well, equalising on seven minutes when Jack Fennell touched home a cross from the left.

Midway through the half, with temperatures reaching a sweltering 27C, there was the unusual sight of the referee halting play so the players and officials could have a much-needed drinks break.

The game had hardly had the chance to settle when Consett regained the lead on 27 minutes. Jake Orrell’s excellent ball saw Stephen Callen beat a defender and the keeper to the ball, pictured top. His effort came back off the post, but he followed it in to tap home from no more than a foot out.

Incredibly, within a minute Blyth had levelled again, when another move down the left saw Adam Johnson slide in to finish from close range at the second attempt.

Consett took the lead for the third time on 34 minutes, when another Orrell pass was helped on, and Callum Guy ran through to lob the keeper for his second of the game, the ball going in off the underside of the bar.

Half-time was reached with the score at 3-2, and Consett made their usual raft of changes for the second half, including a first pre-season appearance for Luke Carr.

In the 51st minute Consett were awarded a penalty after Drew Lake was sent tumbling in the box, but Blyth’s sub keeper read Carr’s kick well and saved down at his right-hand post.

The Steelmen didn’t have to wait long to extend their lead, however, as a minute later Charlie Exley played the ball in to Stephen Callen, who smashed home a great strike from the edge of the box to make it 4-2.

In the 56th minute Exley turned provider again with an excellent cross from the left to pick out a trialist striker, who fired home first time with his left foot.

On 62 minutes it was Callen’s turn to be the provider, when his clever lay-off set up Charlie Exley to fire home from 15 yards to make it 6-2.

Another water break midway through the half gave some fresh impetus to tiring legs, and the trialist striker and Dan Marriott went close to adding to Consett’s tally, but at the final whistle the score was 6-2.

Consett’s next pre-season friendly is on Tuesday, when they visit the 1st Cloud Arena to take on Northern Premier League side South Shields. Kick-off is 7.30pm, and admission is payable at the turnstiles.
