Consett have to settle for a point after 10-man Grimsby Borough come from two down

Consett looked set for a first win in seven games today after going two goals up at Grimsby Borough – but the 10-man home side won a deserved point after recovering to grab a 2-2 draw.

Jack Gibbons gave the Steelmen the lead in the 11th minute when his 25-yarder took a wicked bounce to deceive the home keeper and make it 1-0.

And on 33 minutes Kaleb Young looked to have put the visitors in the driving seat when he doubled their advantage when his low free-kick crept in at the far post, pictured top.

The game seemed to swing even further Consett way three minutes before half-time when home defender Tom Sawyer was shown a straight red card after appearing to kick out at an opponent.

But the home side had other ideas, and halved the deficit in added time at the end of the first half when Adam Drury finished Caine Winfarrah’s cross from close range.

Grimsby Borough started the second half well, and five minutes in they levelled, as Adam Drury scored again, this time with a delicate chip as Consett stood off him.

Consett started to threaten again as the half wore on, and might have grabbed a winner in the 86th minute when Charlie Watt found his way through their defence, but keeper Liam Higton made a fine save to earn his side a point.
