Consett grind out a goalless draw at Tadcaster

Consett picked up another point away from home in the Northern Premier League tonight when they drew 0-0 at bottom club Tadcaster Albion.

The Steelmen welcomed back Calvin Smith, Matty Slocombe, pictured top, and Mark Foden from suspension, but had to settle for a draw on a night when defences were well and truly on top, with neither goalkeeper having a serious save to make.

And although another clean sheet away from home – the fourth since he became manager – will have pleased manager Tony Fawcett, his side failed to score for the fourth successive game.

The result means the Steelmen remain 10th in the table, 10 points off the promotion mix and eight points clear of the relegation play-off zone.

Of Consett’s remaining nine games, six are against teams currently below them in the table, but next up is a trip to third-placed Hebburn Town on Saturday (KO 3pm).

Consett face midweek trip to Tadcaster as postponed fixture is rearranged

Consett’s away game at Tadcaster Albion, postponed earlier this month, will now be played in midweek.

The game was originally due to be at the So-Trak Ltd Stadium in Ings Lane, Tadcaster (LS24 9AY) on Saturday 21 January, but was called off due to a frozen pitch.

Northern Premier League rules state that postponed games must be played within six weeks of the scheduled date, so it will now be take place on Tuesday 28 February, with a 7.45pm kick-off.

Consett have played at Tadcaster once before, on 11 August 2012, the opening day of the 2012-13 season, when we drew 1-1 in an FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie.

A limited number of places are available on the official club coach to North Yorkshire, priced at the standard away fare of £20. These can be booked at the bar and must be paid for in advance.

Leave the A1(M) at Junction 45, taking the first exit onto Moor End/A659. Follow the signs for Tadcaster until you reach High Street. Turn right, then turn left onto New Street, and left again into Centre Lane.

Car parking is available at the ground, and also next to the nearby John Smiths Brewery, which you’ll see at you approach the ground.

Tadcaster trip is next up for Consett – weather permitting

Next up for Consett is the relatively short trip to Tadcaster Albion – one of the few Northern Premier League grounds we have visited before this season.

They play at the So-Trak Ltd Stadium in Ings Lane, Tadcaster (LS24 9AY), which has a capacity of 2,000, including 459 seats and covered standing for 150 spectators. Their average gate this season has been around 190.

We have played there once before, on 11 August 2012, the opening day of the 2012-13 season, when we drew 1-1 in an FA Cup Extra preliminary Round tie (before losing the replay at our old Belle Vue Park ground 3-2 three days later).

The journey is possible by public transport. York Railway Station is 10 miles away, and you’ll then need to pick up a Yorkshire Coastliner bus from the station to Tadcaster bus station. Services 840/843/845 run half-hourly, and the journey takes about 25 minutes. The walk from the bus station to the ground is about quarter of a mile.

Admission is £9 for adults, £6 for concessions, and £2 for 5-16 year-olds, with under-fives free.

Supporters are advised to keep on eye on our own and Tadcaster’s social media accounts before travelling, however; their home game on Saturday v North Shields was off, and they are due to host Sheffield FC tonight.

Consett pick up first Northern Premier League three points with hard-fought win over Tadcaster

Consett are up and running in the Northern Premier League after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Tadcaster Albion at Belle View Stadium today.

After picking up their first point in the 0-0 draw with North Shields in midweek, expectations were high for a first win for the Steelmen since they were promoted.

And they didn’t disappoint, with two first-half goals enough to clinch a very welcome three points.

Kieren Aplin gave the home side the lead in the 10th minute, beating his man with a nice bit of skill and planting the ball in the bottom corner from 22 yards out.

It should have been two on the half-hour when the visiting keeper dropped a cross under pressure from Aplin and it fell to Zak Atkinson, but his shot from close range ended up in the side netting.

On 34 minutes Consett went even closer when, after a bit of pinball from a corner, Calvin Smith’s shot was cleared off the line by Visiting No 9 Brett Agnew.

But they deservedly went into the break with a two-goal lead when Jake Orrell fired home in the 44th minute, pictured top, after playing a great one-two with Aplin.

The visitors reduced the arrears within two minutes of the restart, as skipper Cody Cromack caught Consett napping at the start of the half.

Substitute Dan Marriott had a chance to seal the win in the first of four added minutes, but dragged his shot wide under pressure from a defender.

It mattered not, as the Consett defence held firm to pick up the first win at the new level.

Consett’s home game v Tadcaster brought forward after cup KOs for both clubs

Consett’s home NPL Division One East fixture against Tadcaster Albion has been brought forward after both clubs made an early exit from the FA Cup.

Our 4-1 defeat at Goole last Saturday and Tadcaster’s 2-0 replay loss to our neighbours Tow Law on Tuesday meant both clubs faced a blank Saturday next weekend, when the Preliminary Round will take place.

With both clubs’ agreement, and the Northern Premier League keen to avoid unnecessary midweek travel, the game at Belle View Stadium has been brought forward from Tuesday 13 September to Saturday 20 August, with a 3pm kick-off.

The clubs have met before, in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup back in 2012-13, when we drew 1-1 at Tadcaster, but lost the replay 3-2 at our old Belle Vue Park ground.
